Migrating to Australia
Why move to Australia?
A destination of choice
Australia remains an attractive destination for many. A record wave of Irish emigrants are expected to head to Australia to escape the country’s crippled economy as the Irish Government struggles to handle Europe’s biggest budget deficit and 13 per cent unemployment. An estimated 200,000 are expected to flee Down Under because of the downturn and Australia is top of the list of new places to call home. Australia has already had a taste of the exodus, with a record jump in Irish migrants in the 12 months to June 30 this year.
More than 3000 Irish migrated to Australia in that period — a 21.6 per cent increase on last year, the Department of Immigration says.
Another recent survey from the UK showed a 31% leap in the number of UK migrants that arrived in Australia in 2008, compared to the previous year. Migrant numbers to Australia have more than doubled (from 9000 to 23,000) in the last decade, with over 400,000 leaving the UK since 2006.
So what is it that is so enticing?
Maybe is is the draw of warm weather and an enviable lifestyle born of an outdoorsy, ‘work to live, not live to work’ attitude. The unemployment rate in Australia is still relatively low and it was one of only a handful of countries that didn’t experience a recession recently.
Moving to Australia is often a lifestyle choice. Referred to as ‘the lucky country’, Australia offers a high standard of living, relatively inexpensive real estate, ancient and varied landscapes, temperate weather, world-leading education and health systems and political and economic stability. With quality, beautiful homes to be found for less than £200,000, there is major incentive to start anew in Australia.
Be happy!
Studies confirm that those migrants that do make the move to Australia are extremely happy with their decision. The Changing Settlement Experience of New Migrants Report shows that 95% of skilled migrants have employment within 18 months of arrival and 94% are ‘very satisfied’ with their new lives.
Senator Amanda Vanstone of the Australian government sums up the development of the immigration success saying, “Not only are we attracting more skilled migrants than ever before, but these publications show that they are also happy with their lives in Australia and are becoming highly successful.”
