Perseverance Leads to Success in the IT & Digital industry

A lot of candidates have asked me in interviews “How can I be successful? What is the secret?” The fact of the matter is that successful people are successful for many different reasons and find success in many different ways. What makes one person successful is not necessarily going to make the next person succeed at the same thing. However, if there is one thing I would pin-point, it is perseverance.

A “never give up” attitude eventually results in success, and history has all the people to prove it.

Let’s start with Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple. In 1985, Jobs eventually left Apple after he learnt he was about to be moved to a position that rendered him powerless within the firm. After essentially leaving the company he founded, Jobs successfully led NeXT (which was eventually bought by Apple) and Pixar, the lovable animation studio that is now owned by Disney. Jobs returned to Apple in 1997 and led Apple to huge success. Most people, after leaving the company they so dearly founded, might have done something else or given up, but not Steve Jobs. Perseverance leads to success.

How about J.K. Rowling? She was reported to be the first billionaire writer. However, her success was not easy. She finished her first manuscript of Harry Potter in 1995 and submitted it to 12 different publishers who rejected her work. Even when she managed to find a publisher for her book, she was still advised to find something else to do because her publisher did not expect her to make much money from her writing. After the publication of Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone, her popularity skyrocketed, leading to more books, movies and a franchise. Many might have given up after the first 2 or 3 rejections. J.K. Rowling did not, and her perseverance is a hallmark of her success.

Finally, Bill Gates. Along with Paul Allen and Paul Gilbert, Bill Gates led a company called Traf-O-Data. The company’s idea was to read data from traffic counters and generate reports on traffic, a non-simple feat in the 1970s. However, a weak business plan meant the company did not have many customers. Traf-O-Data closed in 1980 after years of losses. However, this experience led to Microsoft, a brand synonymous with computing in the 21st century. A failed business is enough to make even some strong-hearted individuals to give up. Bill Gates persevered in the face of failure to find success.

All of these people, and many many more in history, find success in many different ways. However, all of them have one thing in common and that is perseverance. They have a never-give-up attitude that enables them to succeed at what they do. Failure is a learning experience. If you ask me, I would say that the secret to success is perseverance. It is the ability to look at the face of failure and not give up.
